Grant Overview
Florida's military families face unique mental health challenges due to frequent relocations and deployment-related stress. According to the Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs, over 1.5 million veterans reside in the state, with many struggling to access consistent mental health support. The state's rural areas, such as the Panhandle region, exacerbate this issue due to limited access to specialized services. Military families in Florida, particularly those with young children, are disproportionately affected by the lack of accessible mental health resources. Our telehealth initiative aims to bridge this gap by providing virtual counseling and support groups tailored to their specific needs. By leveraging Florida's existing telehealth infrastructure, including the Florida Telehealth Network, we can ensure seamless access to mental health services. This funding will support the development of a customized telehealth platform, prioritizing Florida's 67 counties with the highest veteran populations. Unlike neighboring states, Florida's funding priority will be given to projects demonstrating capacity to serve the unique needs of military families through virtual delivery. Florida's diverse geography, from the rural Panhandle to urban centers like Jacksonville, requires a flexible telehealth solution that can adapt to varying levels of connectivity and technological literacy. The state's major military installations, including Eglin Air Force Base and MacDill Air Force Base, will be key areas of focus for our initiative. By addressing the mental health needs of military families in Florida, we can strengthen familial bonds and foster resilience in the face of adversity. Key considerations include the state's broadband infrastructure, which remains a challenge in rural areas, and the demographic characteristics of Florida's military families, including age distribution and diversity. Florida's economy, driven in part by its military presence, will also benefit from a healthier and more resilient military family population.
